Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (the priest is the Ordinary Minister) assist with the distribution of Holy Eucharist at Mass or in homes for the sick or elderly.
This ministry makes a few demands on time beyond attending Mass, and is a fulfilling one for the minister who is privileged to physically take Jesus out into the faith community. The USCCB states "Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion should receive sufficient spiritual, theological, and practical preparation to fulfill their role with knowledge and reverence."
Training is provided by the Diocese outside the parish.
